ADMISSIONS POLICY

Our annual intake of 180 students includes a number with statements of special needs.  In the event of the school being oversubscribed, the Local Education Authority has a policy for the allocation of places.  Full details are sent to parents by the LEA in October, in the ‘Information for Parents’ document.  Briefly the criteria are as follows:

Where the number of children seeking admission to the school is likely to exceed its published admission limit, preferences will be given to:

i)              a child residing in the school’s catchment area;

ii)             a child who would have a brother or sister attending the school not only at the time of application but when the younger child is due to start;

iii)            a child who has a special reason for admission.  This reason will probably be of a medical, physical or social nature and production of a medical certificate or other appropriate information is required;

Parents claiming such a special reason must inform the Education Directorate Office in writing at the time of application and attach

any supporting documentation to the completed preferred school form;

iv)        a child who lives nearest to the school by the shortest walking route;

v)         students with a statement of special educational needs which names the school

vi)           students in the ‘looked after’ system where the approved agencies agree that the preferred school meets the child’s social, pastoral and educational needs;

Where applications are being considered in each of the categories (i) to (iii), if the number of children seeking admission exceeds the places available, allocations will be made with preference being given to a child who lives nearest to the school by the shortest walking route.

At times other than normal transfer, if parents wish to transfer their child to the same age group in another school, parents should discuss the transfer with the Headteacher of the student’s present school in the first instance.  If it is then decided to make a formal request for transfer, parents should complete an application form, available from the school to which you are applying.
